About Me

I was born and raised in Portage la Prairie and graduated from Arthur Meighen High School. I joined the RCMP and after graduating I served in various cities in BC for 10 years before moving back to Portage. Shortly after I then owned and operated Porter Auto Sales at the corner of 6th Street NW and Saskatchewan Ave for 20 years. The past 4 years I have done seasonal work at Agrium Bloom Distribution Centre. My wife, Terrie and I have 2 children, son Mathew and daughter Cole who are both attending University. Mathew is graduating from the University of Manitoba in 2011 with a Degree in Geology. Cole graduates in 2012 from Asian Languages at the University of Calgary. Terrie is the Deputy Sheriff for the Central Judiciary Region and works out of Portage.

My Interests

Terrie and I are supporters of the Rotary Student Exchange Program.  Cole went to Taiwan for a year with this program.  We have since hosted Clair from France and Tobias from Norway living in our home for 4 months each.

I was a volunteer for the 2006 Canada Senior Games and the 2010 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games.  I have coached Minor Hockey and was a Meet Official for the Piranha Swim Club.  I have done fundraising for the Portage Terrier Hockey Club by organizing Golf Tournaments and Socials.  I have been involved with Toastmasters and the Kinsmen Club.
My hobbies include carpentry, golf and old cars.

  1. Dirty politics always leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

There is a respectful amount of diverse people in my circle, and we agree, no matter if it's running for council, or running for mayor, you’ve always kept your campaigns clean and respectful. (We can't always say that about the other guys.)

We obviously haven’t been smart in how we have voted in the past to who we want at the helm of our city. Clearly, voting for someone with your type of principles will not only increase our city government’s performance, it will establish accountability. We believe that Portage needs a mayor with your old fashion “Role up his sleeves and work hard” attitude and THAT is the frame work of “Good Business”

  2. Hey Mr. Porter,
first of all I really like the idea that you are for keeping the old rink open, it shows that you are taking interest in the youth in our town and you actually understand the problems we face. Most people that run for Mayor figure youth doesn't count, however some of us are of age to vote. My parent says you would make a great Mayor too.
